From A Doctor's Perspective
These Are The Questions That Are Often Asked
How should I prepare for cancer therapy to be as robust as I can be?
What can I do during chemo to reduce side effects and increase the effectiveness of the treatment?
What should I eat? Keto? Vegan? Mediterranean? Or should I be fasting?
Does fasting help or hinder?
Should I take supplements. Which ones? When? Could some be promoting the cancer to grow?
Should I be exercising or resting. If exercise, then what sort?
Coaching
We know lifestyle and nutrition change can be difficult at the best of times. We know that it can sometimes seem overwhelming when combined with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Health coaches are trained to support you with these changes at your pace, sensitive to the fact that you will be having good days and some bad ones. Your cancer program health coach will be there to support you and your goals.
Some Examples Of The Science
Warberg effect. Otto Warberg won the Nobel prize in 1930 for describing that many cancer cells use a primitive form of respiration (energy production) called glycolysis. This converts one glucose molecule into 2 ATP (energy molecules). Healthy cells convert each glucose molecule into 36 ATP molecules. Most cancer cells can only use glucose as a fuel while normal cells can use fats as well as glucose. We strongly advocate that people with cancer avoid sugar. Reducing the fuel supply to cancer cells must slow their growth and at a minimum increase their susceptibility to chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.
Nutrient sensors. Insulin, IGF1, MTOR and AMPK sense levels of macronutrients in the blood and then send growth messages to both cancer cells and normal cells. We can influence cancer cell growth by adjusting macronutrient intake. Lowering dietary carbohydrates lowers insulin and can turn of growth signalling. MTOR does the same with protein and AMPK senses overall calorie intake also offering an opportunity to influence cancer cell growth through Fasting.
What About Fasting?
Fasting. Cells grow during the fed state. During the fasted state cells are repaired or replaced and recycled. The medical terms are apoptosis and autophagy. Intermittent fasting and longer fasts can be used as a tool to increase cancer cell death.

"A huge thank you to Dr Glen and Health Coach Jaala. 3 1/2 months ago I was concerned with my HBA1C being 48 and wanted to bring this back to normal levels. I have followed the LCHF lifestyle for 2 1/2 years and was reaping the benefits of no inflammation and other advantages. I contacted Dr Glen & Jaala and following a very thorough consultation and based on their recommendations I refined my way of eating and now 3 1/2 months later my HBA1C is now 40. During this time I caught covid and came through well. I am now back playing squash at 62 years old. Dr Glen and Jaala provided encouragement and support over the time. You can ask them any questions and they always came, back with an answer. No question was too silly. Thanks again to Dr Glen & Jaala."
