Shared Medical Appointments

Shared Medical Appointments or Group Consultations are used widely in America and the UK, in both primary care and in hospitals. They are used in Australia but have only been used infrequently in New Zealand to date. Reversal NZ plans to change that.

What is a SMA?

These are individual consultations, performed in a group setting. 6 to 12 people, with a similar condition, such as T2 Diabetes, meet together for an hour.

Each person consults with the doctor but others are involved in the consultation, listening but they may also contribute from their own experiences. The doctor then moves to the next person, repeating the process till everyone has had a chance to present their problem. So everyone gets an opportunity to learn from each of the others.

Effectively your consult is an hour long rather than just 10 minutes. Relevant topics, that you may not have thought to ask ,are likely to be covered.

The main concern, when people first hear about SMA is confidentiality. You are asked to sign a confidentiality form before starting and we really emphasise that it is a privilege to share health information with others. In our experience everyone has been extremely respectful of the privilege. To our knowledge there has never been a law suit concerning confidence breaches, in a SMA, even in America!

SMA is both more effective, more fun, more cost effective than a standard consult. I expect it would be most applicable to a whanau of multiple generations with shared health concerns, or a hapu or community. If local we can come to your marae or community hall. Consider this as an option for restoring wellness for yourself and for those to are close to.

Jaala and Glen’s experience

Jaala and Glen have trained as a SMA facilitators with ASLM. Glen has taught SMA throughout NZ, on behalf of ASLM. Glen has run more than 10 SMAs at TMC. During Covid Glen and Jaala ran what they believe was NZs first virtual SMA for Reverse T2 Diabetes Taupo.

Comments By Dr Glen Davies

The real power of SMA is that others with the same health challenge can provide their wisdom and experience. This is so much more fun than a one on one consult for the clients and for the clinician. I think Whanau/Fanau particularly appreciate this form of consultation.
