Message from Dr Glen Davies about our Weight Loss Programme

I can only imagine what it has felt like for you. I have never been overweight so I cannot possibly know. But as a doctor I have felt so powerless and inadequate. Everything I have tried to help people lose weight over my 24-year career has failed. I have felt so frustrated and disillusioned. 

But now I feel guilty and embarrassed. I know most of you have been following the advice I have been giving you. We know this from studies. People have been told to eat 6 to 11 servings of whole grains, go for the low-fat options, swap butter for margarine and canola oil. People have been following my “eat less and move more” advice and you have been getting fatter and more diabetic. Some doctors may have even accused you of lying about what you have actually been eating, blame the patient.

Now that I understand why we get fat and what we need to do to lose weight, I am offering a huge apology on behalf of medicine. We got it horribly wrong and you are suffering as a consequence. On behalf of my profession “Sorry” I am truly sorry. You HAVE been eating less and moving more and have not lost the weight. I put up my hand, take responsibility and apologise.

But I want to do more than just apologise. I want to right the wrong. By reading and listening and learning from colleagues far wiser than me I have learned the reason for obesity and consequently how to lose weight. The “Calorie model of obesity” has been replaced by the “Hormonal model”. It is not about calories; it is about this powerful hormone Insulin. Insulin is both a nutrient sensor and a growth factor. It monitors blood glucose and if levels are high it causes the body to grow, to store fat. If blood sugar and insulin levels are low it tells the body to burn fat. It is that simple. High insulin = store fat, Low insulin levels = burn fat. In the past people have been eating less and exercising but not managing insulin causing the fat to be trapped inside the fat stores.

Now that we know how to lower insulin clients are losing weight, sometimes for the first time in their life. I see their joy, excitement and relief. And they are doing this without feeling hungry. Many could never have imagined this even as a possibility let alone a reality.

The science proves Low carb Healthy fat (LCHF) diets are the most effective nutritional tool to lose weight and keep the weight off. Most easily combine this with intermittent fasting. My statistics show an average of 1.2 kg weight loss per week. Lose weight without being hungry, feel energetic, have less joint pain due to reduced inflammation.

What can you expect?

Your Initial Consultation will be with Dr Glen Davies, and a Health Coach.

During this time we really get to know you, your history, and who you are. We also take vital stats. You will have received a lab test request several days before your appointment, and we’ll go through this with you.

In the following weeks you’ll meet with your Health Coach weekly, either face to face in our clinic or via Telehealth. You’ll see a lot of your Coach in the first weeks, because there’s lots to learn, and often lots of changes. Your coach will be on this journey with you, on your side and with you the whole way.

We’ll add in more learning too, with an online interactive programme designed by Prekure, who are world leaders in tools and resources that are based on the latest science about Weight Loss. It has recipes, meal plans, and lots of new ideas about the weight loss, delivered in a fun and interesting way.

You’ll have a meeting (either face to face or via telehealth) with our Personal Trainer to talk about finding the right physical activity for you.

After the first month you’ll be in contact with your coach either via our interactive App Pukeko, via messaging or via telehealth to keep on track, keep accountable and work through new challenges.

What sort of things do we check?

This initial consultation goes into the biochemistry and physiology of weight gain. There’s lots of science about metabolism and mitochondrial energy production, but Glen has perfected the art of condensing and individualising this information so that you will “get it” easily.

What We Do

At the 3 month mark we’ll review your blood results again, and compare them to the initial results. This check in helps set the medical goals for the second half of the programme.

Your Health Coach will keep working with you right through the next 3 months, up to the 6 month mark where we’ll review your blood results again.

And after the 6 months (or any time during the programme) we have free support groups, and resources. We even have a library of virtually every influential book from the world’s best Low Carb authorities.
